You Do Not Need a Perfect First Joke.
Most people are funnier, stranger, and more specific in conversation than they give themselves credit for. The hard part is not having a lifetime supply of punchlines. It is learning how to listen for the observation that has some heat in it, then staying with it long enough to find the point of view.
Stage Left's stand-up comedy class is a room for doing that work out loud. You can bring a first idea, a page of half-finished notes, a story you have told a hundred times, or a set that needs a better ending. Cheryl King helps you find what is already alive in the material, then gives it shape without sanding off the part that makes it yours.

Stand-up is not one skill. It is writing, listening, editing, timing, and the willingness to keep trying a line until it says what you meant. Class gives you a place to work on each part with clear feedback and enough room to take a risk.
- Material: turning an observation, memory, or irritation into a premise with somewhere to go.
- Editing: finding the useful detail, cutting what is in the way, and letting the laugh arrive sooner.
- Delivery: learning what changes when you slow down, commit to a point of view, or let a line land.
- Crowd work: staying present with the room instead of treating an unexpected moment as a disaster.
The aim is not to make every comic sound alike. It is to help you recognize the material and performance choices that make an audience lean in because they could not have heard that exact point of view from anybody else.

Cheryl started writing stand-up in 1982 and within two months began a 13-year touring career that took her from opening act to headliner. Her teaching brings that performer's understanding of timing and audience connection together with decades spent directing, writing, coaching, and producing original work.
She is also the founder of Stage Left Studio, which began in Manhattan in 2005 as a place for artists to develop new work and put it onstage. That matters in a stand-up room. You need more than a vague instruction to be confident. You need a coach who can identify what is working, ask the right question when it is not, and help you build an act that has a real point of view.

Bring the Rough Draft.
If you are new to stand-up, class gives you a practical way in. You can learn how to start from a true detail, find a premise, and make a choice about the kind of performer you want to be before the pressure of an open mic tells you to copy someone else's rhythm.
If you already perform, the work can be just as useful. A set may need a tighter structure, a stronger opening, a clearer ending, or a better sense of where the audience is with you. Cheryl works with material and delivery together, because a line on the page is not the same thing as a line in a room.
Returning students may take single classes for $30. For current class dates, private coaching, or a small custom group, reach out directly and tell Cheryl what you want to work on.
Why a Class
Comedy Gets Clearer When You Hear It.
It is easy to spend months alone with a note in your phone, trying to decide whether an idea is funny enough to show anyone. A class lets you stop guessing. You get to say it, hear how it lands, notice what the audience follows, and make the next pass with more information than you had before.
That process also makes room for the part of stand-up that is harder to teach from a list of rules: your own taste. Some comics are drawn to stories. Some work best from a sharp complaint, a character, a confession, or an odd observation. The goal is not to force a style onto you. It is to help you recognize the thread you can keep pulling.
There will be drafts that do not work yet. That is normal. The useful question is not whether you can avoid that moment. It is whether you can stay curious long enough to find what the draft is trying to become.

Do I need stand-up experience?
No. The class is open to beginners as well as comics who already have material and want more time, feedback, and practice. You do not need to arrive with a finished set.
What do we work on in class?
Cheryl teaches material creation, editing, crowd work, delivery, and the choices that help an individual comic develop an act that feels like their own.
When and where does the stand-up class meet?
Stand-up meets most Monday nights from 7:05 to 9:30 PM at Keller Co-Work Space, 140 Keller Street in downtown Petaluma, when scheduled. Reach out for the next class date.
