About Cheryl King
Director. Comic. Coach. Instigator.
Cheryl King founded Stage Left Studio in 2005 as a place to develop new work and help artists put it onstage.
Cheryl first began writing for herself as a mime in 1979. In 1982 she wrote her first stand-up routine and, within two months, began a 13-year touring career that took her from opening act to headliner.
After moving to New York in 1989, she wrote and performed her own solo work, studied acting and playwriting, and trained in improvisation with Gary Austin and Michael Gellman. She has directed more than 60 plays and solo shows.
Stage Left Studio became a Midtown Manhattan hub for solo show creators and performing artists. Under Cheryl's leadership it produced more than 100 small-cast and solo shows, plus the Left Out Festival, Women at Work Festival, and Beyond the Pale Festival.
Cheryl was a resident acting coach at All My Children from 2007 to 2010. She received a 2015 Lower Manhattan Cultural Council grant for her Gender Project.

Cheryl produces and stars in Forbidden Kiss LIVE at The California Theatre, teaches improv in Petaluma and Santa Rosa, offers stand-up instruction and private coaching, and leads a weekly writing workshop on Zoom.
